About Us

History

AirSPEED Wireless, and our parent company Mascon Cable Systems, are based in Salmon Arm, BC and are proud members of our community. Mascon Cable Systems has operated small cable companies throughout British Columbia since 1983. In 2001, Mascon’s directors saw the need for high-speed internet access in under served rural areas and started AirSPEED Wireless. AirSPEED now delivers high speed wireless internet to most communities in the Shuswap and we continue to expand and grow every year.

Who We Are

Since the beginning, Mascon – and now AirSPEED Wireless – have been family-oriented, starting from a staff of three, Mascon and AirSPEED now employ 20 people, most of whom were born and raised here in the BC Interior. We are all committed to our community, raising our families here and helping those around us. Many of our staff coach amateur sports teams, volunteer to the Fire Department and participate in service or business associations in our spare time. AirSPEED and Mascon are also corporate supporters of all aspects of community life from kids to seniors, kindergarten to college, and a variety of local amateur sports. We are members of the community, so our neighbors matter to us!

We work hard to stay on the forefront of internet technology and continually find new ways to deliver the latest advances to our customers. Our service standards are second to none and our maintenance technicians are available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

We are proud to be your community’s high-speed internet professionals and we thank you for your support. We’re here to stay and here for you!

High-speed wireless internet doesn't use a phone line, so you can surf the web and send/receive e-mail without missing that important phone call! It is also much faster to download information from the internet, so you can upgrade software or download graphics or files that would take ages using dial-up internet access.
Almost magic ...but not quite. A small antenna is placed on your house and connected to a card inside your computer. This antenna is used to send and receive data between your computer and our mountaintop transmit towers located throughout the Shuswap. From this transmit site, the data is sent via microwave to our offices in Salmon Arm, from there it is sent via optical fiber to the internet. Note: AirSPEED Wireless Internet is a line of site service, which means your home must be able to see one of towers with no obstructions. A site check must be done prior to an application being taken, to ensure there are no obstructions.
A small antenna is installed on your house or business. This antenna must be positioned so it can ""see"" one of our transmit towers. An ethernet converter is installed, which enables your computer to communicate with the antenna. We supply all the software needed to install the high-speed internet system. Homes or offices with more than one computer, are installed in a similar fashion, although a router will be needed. An ethernet cable is then run to your existing LAN. AirSPEED Wireless Internet is powered by: Motorola
Residential customers on Home package can expect download speeds of up to 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Package details are available here.
Our wireless technician will first do a site check at your home to ensure you have an un-obstructed view of our tower. If they determine all is good, they may finish the installation then and there, or re-schedule your installation depending on his schedule for that day. On the day of your installation the installer will mount the antenna run cable to your computer and install the wireless receiver equipment. The installer will also configure your email address, check for viruses and spyware. Normally complete installation can be finished within two hours. After completion you will be able to surf.
Snow and rain can affect your signal...but our technicians factor that in when they install your antenna, and allow for a fade margin. So...you should never notice a degradation of signal.

Choose a domain name that represents your business and the products and services you offer
Domain names can be up to 63 characters, but try to create the shortest domain name that is most recognizable to your audience and incorporates a popular keyword into your domain name
The easier your domain name is to pronounce, the easier it will be to remember
Dashes work well if you want to create a domain name that is unavailable, i.e. www.your-own-domain.com (they also show up higher in search engines)
Some people assume that because their PC runs Windows they need to buy a Windows hosting package. This isn't true. Access to your web account will most likely be through FTP or a control panel and both servers support these methods.

Your choice of server platforms should be dictated by the use to which you intend to put it. The majority of web features run fine on both platforms including PHP, mySQL, POP3 etc. If you intend to create your site using ASP, FrontPage, the .NET environment, Access database, or any of the other Microsoft proprietary technologies then you probably need to use a Windows server.

The reliability and stability of the different platforms have been the topic of many long arguments. The main reason that Windows is seen as being insecure is that it is the most widely used operating system for home PC's. People spend more time looking for flaws in the most common system. With Linux being the most common server type, it has a surprising number of successful hack attempts made on it. In the end the security of both platforms comes down to the competency of the system administrators. If you are security minded then you'll do better to make sure that the hosting company is reputable and highly skilled than to worry about the server they use.

In terms of performance there's not a huge difference between the two servers. Linux reportedly performs faster because Windows (as usual) attempts to offer an 'all in one' package instead of the extendable Linux implementation. You'll generally not notice a difference but if performance is of utmost importance to you then maybe this will influence your decision.

Developers are constantly improving both Linux and Windows so they should be fairly close in terms of features, security, and reliability for a long time.
